The Resident Coordinator of South Sudan, Anita Kiki Gbeho, who also serves as the UNMISS Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Humanitarian Affairs, and the Resident Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, undertook a joint visit to Abyei from 2 – 4 March, to assess firsthand the humanitarian situation and ongoing joint programme interventions. They were accompanied by Heads of UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes from both countries.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on the UNISFA Acting HoM/FC Maj. Gen. Robert Affram to discuss the security situation in Abyei and areas for enhanced collaboration. They also met with the Sudan and South Sudan appointed administrations, visited joint programme initiatives, and engaged with displaced populations to better understand their needs and challenges. They highlighted the need to prioritise and step up humanitarian assistance in Abyei and to increase advocacy for the pressing humanitarian intervention in the area.
