16 Days of Activism: Leaders Call for Stronger Protection of Women and Girls in Abyei

At the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence on 25 November, UNISFA joined local leaders in calling for renewed, collective efforts to end violence against women, girls, families, and communities across Abyei. The ceremony marks the beginning of a series of activities in the northern and southern parts of Abyei aimed at raising awareness and strengthening protection against GBV.

Speaking at the event, the OIC Ag Head of Mission and Force Commander, Brig Gen Ameer Umrani, emphasized the power of unity in combatting GBV. “Let this year’s campaign remind us that our strength lies in unity. When we raise our voices together, we replace silence with action, fear with courage, and stigma with support. By standing as one community - CPCs, women’s unions, youth groups, traditional leaders, UNPOL, NGOs, and all protection partners - we send a powerful message that violence, whether physical or digital, has no place here.”

Brig Gen Umrani urged communities to challenge harmful norms and support survivors with compassion. “Ending violence in all its forms starts with awareness, with speaking out, and with committed community leadership. It requires us to challenge harmful practices, support survivors, and ensure accountability for perpetrators. Parents must guide their children; leaders must set the right tone; men and boys must champion respect; and women and girls must know they have power, voice, and value,” he said.

Speakers called for greater awareness of the growing harmful impact of digital violence which can limit women’s participation in public life and deter survivors from seeking help.  They called on leaders to seize this moment to advocate for the recognition that violence is not only what happens in public spaces but also what occurs silently on phones and private digital platforms.

The ceremony, which was organized by the local administration, UNPOL and partners, brought together representatives from the administration, traditional authorities, peace partners, civil society organizations, and community leaders, all united in advocating for stronger protection of women and girls.

This year’s global theme, “UNITE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” underscores the urgent need for bold action to address harmful online behaviors and promote safer communities.

A series of activities have been organized in the northern and southern part of Abyei, including awareness campaigns, community dialogue, and outreach events designed to mobilize collective action and reinforce the commitment to gender equality while supporting community-led solutions to end violence against women and girls.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign runs until 10 December, marking Human Rights Day.
