GHANBATT donates assorted relief materials to women group in Marial Achak

Abyei, 22 August 2022 – The CIMIC Team of the Ghanian Battalion (GHANBATT) led by the Officer Commanding Marial Achak COB, Capt. SO Sarkodie, recently donated some assorted relief items to the Marial Achak Women Association in the Marial Achak Village. The donation, comprising of T-Shirts, flashlights, bathing soaps, some toothpastes, and brushes, as well as packs of washing powder and sanitary pads was made to the group which comprises of young girls from ages 12 to 16 years and elderly women ranging from30 years and above.

The donation was a collaborative initiative with the Force Headquarters Gender Affairs Office and a follow up of the CIMIC Team’s engagement with the Association who requested for materials to support their day-to-day activities. The initiative feeds into the vision of the Acting Head of Missions/ Force Commander and directives that units are in touch with the communities they have been mandated to protect through the provision of humanitarian assistance.

 Both the leader of the Women Association, Mrs. Mariam Deng and the Chief of the Community, Mr. Mawein Mayul expressed gratitude to GHANBATT for their timely intervention. They also applauded the Commanding Officer, Lt Col E Aboagye Tieku, for his transformational agenda in Sector South and implored the Unit to continue with the good work, adding that, the kind gesture has further strengthened the Association to continue to pursue the welfare and interest of the women for the betterment of the community.

They further thanked GHANBATT for the daily medical assistance they receive at the Marial ACHAK COB and other humanitarian activities such as regular water supply and transport assistance for their foodstuffs during the period of security challenges in their general area. They were full of praise for the UNISFA leadership for the humanitarian drive which has helped to foster goodwill for the Mission.

It can be recalled that, on Sunday 24 July 2022, a four-room classroom block at Awolnhom village, Sector South rejuvenated by the Ghanian Battalion (GHANBATT-I) with the collaboration of the Community Liaison Office and an International Organization (INGO) Save the Child was commissioned by the Acting HoM/FC, Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr. GHANBATT-I Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Eric Abagye-Tieku, said the project was in line with the Force Commander’s initiative of improving the education standards within the communities in Abyei within the overall context of winning hearts and minds of the communities.
