On 8 March, UNISFA in conjunction with the Abyei Women’s Union commemorated the International Women’s Day in Abyei. The celebration which had the theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment” was attended by about 350 individuals comprising community members and other stakeholders, to celebrate progress in gender equality and reaffirm commitments to women’s rights.

The Chairperson highlighted the role of women in peacebuilding and called for strengthened partnerships for empowerment. Similarly, the Ag HoM/FC Maj. Gen. Robert Affram delivered the UN Secretary-General’s message to commemorate the day.

He also seized the opportunity to emphasize on gender equality while commending the efforts of women in maintaining global peace as well as the critical women play in development.

The celebration fostered dialogue and reaffirmed commitments from UNISFA and local leaders to advancing opportunities for women and girls in Abyei.
