ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE, UNISFA RECOMMITS TO PEACE IN ABYEI

The United Nations Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA) joined the world in commemorating this year’s International Day of Peace at the mission Headquarters in Abyei.

The ceremony, held under this year’s theme ‘Act Now for a Peaceful World’, brought together the Abyei Administration and Ngok Dinka traditional leadership as a reminder of the collective responsibility in ensuring peace and security sustains in Abyei.

Delivering remarks on behalf of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Ag. Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Robert Affram, underscored the urgent need for vigilance, unity and empathy, encouraging all stakeholders to combat misinformation, reject hate speech and embrace inclusivity. He emphasized that peace, though fragile, must be constantly nurtured and protected.

Major General Affram reiterated the mission’s commitment to ensuring that peace and security in Abyei is sustained. While acknowledging the important contributions of the Abyei Leadership, he urged for their continued engagement and collaboration with UNISFA in the pursuit of peace.

Chief Administrator, Justice Charles Abyei, acknowledged that significant challenges remain and called for the collective efforts of peace partners and local stakeholders to jointly address pressing issues, calling for vigilance ahead of the upcoming dry season which is likely to present additional challenges. He expressed appreciation for UNISFA’s support in maintaining peace and security in Abyei.

A peace walk with the participation of military, civilian and UNPOL peacekeepers was organized to draw attention to the shared commitment to peace in Abyei by UNISFA peacekeepers.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981. It is dedicated to ceasefire and non-violence and is an occasion during which all promote tolerance, justice, and human rights. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire. The global theme of this year’s observance is a call to all to take concrete action to mobilize for peace.
