A significant portion of the 500 shops at Amiet Peace Market went up in flames on 8 February. Hundreds of tonnes of food, in a region that already faces acute food insecurity, were destroyed. The incident has left several people homeless and devasted the lives. Majority of the people in Abyei depend on the market for their livelihood and as a hub for trade between Sudan and South Sudan.

To kick-start the new year, acting HOM/Force Commander Major General Kefyalew, led a delegation of senior officials on a four-day tour of all the battalions in the UNISFA Area of Responsibility - to assess the readiness of troops. The delegation was briefed by the battalion commanders about their operations and the security situation in the AO.

UNISFA and local authorities organised the Traditional Leaders Conference in Todach on 16 and 17 December 2020. Ngok Dinka and Misseriya leaders attended the meeting. Although the meeting did not end with the anticipated written agreement, both sides reiterated their commitment to support UNISFA in its effort to fulfil its mandate fail

UNISFA officials are on standby to ensure compliance with Covid19 measures particularly among new arrivals in the mission area.

Women and youth representatives at the Aweil Conference have called on their leaders to put aside their differences and embrace peace. They decried the continued violence and criminality in Abyei Area saying that they are the most impacted. They appealed to the leaders to conclude the conference with a resolution ensuring the inclusion and participation of women and youth in all future peace processes and negotiations.
