The Indian Battalion (INDBATT-III) of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) commemorated India’s 80th Independence Day with a Medal Day Parade, recognising the service of Indian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations flag.
The occasion brought together UNISFA Mission Leadership, military and civilian personnel and invited guests to commemorate India’s national day and recognise the contribution of Indian peacekeepers to the Mission’s efforts to promote peace, security and stability in Abyei. United Nations Medals were awarded to Indian peacekeepers on 15 August 2026 in recognition of their service and contribution to peace and security in Abyei. The ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant General Ganesh Shrestha, Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander.
Lieutenant General Shrestha commended INDBATT-III for its operational readiness, adaptability and professionalism since its arrival in the Mission Area. Through sustained patrolling, area domination, presence in sensitive locations and effective force protection measures, the Battalion has contributed to security within its Area of Responsibility. During the recently concluded migration period, engagement with community leaders, UNPOL, National Monitors and other stakeholders supported timely interventions and peace dialogues, helping to mitigate tensions and facilitate safe migration.
The Battalion’s contribution has also extended to civil-military cooperation and community engagement initiatives, including medical assistance and evacuation, veterinary care, water provision, vocational training, learning-centre activities and self-defence sessions for local youth. These initiatives reflect the Battalion’s engagement with communities in its Area of Responsibility and have received positive acknowledgement from local leadership and the Government of South Sudan.
In recognition of its contribution to UN peacekeeping, INDBATT-III was presented with the Force Commander’s Appreciation. The recognition acknowledged the collective efforts of the Battalion in supporting the Mission’s mandate while maintaining high standards of service in a demanding peacekeeping environment.
Addressing the medal recipients, who included military staff officers and military observers, Lieutenant General Shrestha said the award reflected their “unwavering dedication, professionalism and selfless service” to the Mission.
The ceremony concluded with congratulations to the medal recipients and recognition of their service in support of the Mission’s mandate and efforts to sustain peace in Abyei. The Force Commander commended the Indian peacekeepers as exemplary ambassadors of their country, noting their professionalism, discipline, respect for communities, and spirit of cooperation.
