More peacekeepers receive UN Peace Medals

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) showed its appreciation to gallant officers, men and women of Ethiopia’s 16th Motorized Battalion, Level 2 Hospital Unit and the Quick Reaction Force along with Military Staff Officers and Military Observers of various nationalities who are serving UNISFA.

Around 1,148 men and women received the United Nations Peace Medals in recognition of their tireless service to support and maintain peace and security efforts in Abyei Area.

The awarded troops showcased their expertise and displayed their combat skills during the medal parade held in Dokura, 10 km north of Abyei town, on 20 February 2018.

The second UN peace medal awarding ceremony for 2018 was led by Maj General Tesfay Gidey Hailemichael, UNISFA’s Force Commander and acting Head of Mission; Mr Alexander Rose, UNISFA Chief of Staff/ Principal Officer; Brig Gen Assefa Gebru Workneh, UNISFA Chief Liaison Officer for Abyei; and Col. Teweldebirhan Hagos, Commander of the 16th Motorized Peacekeeping Battalion.

The medal day parade was graced by the presence of Bulabek Deng Kuol, Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief; Jamea Sadeeq, Secretary of Collective Peace Committee (Misseriya) together with other Misseriya community leaders; and was also witnessed by the National Monitors from Sudan and South Sudan.
