Pakistan battalion deploys to UNISFA
The Pakistan army has dispatched the advance party of its battalion to UNISFA. The advance team, comprising of 15 personnel, arrived in the mission Area of Operation on 9 February 2022, and was deployed to UNISFA Todach Team Site of Sector North. PakBatt is the second contingent to deploy after the commencement of the ongoing Force reconfiguration and transitioning of UNISFA to a Multi-National Force.
PakBatt is expected to deploy a battalion comprising 570 troops. The battalion would comprise of 32 officers, 23 junior commissioned officers and 515 soldiers. It will be deployed in Sector North and likely to occupy positions in Diffra, Tajeli, Umme Kheriat and Todach.
The advance party is currently liaising with Ethiopian troops in Sector North to ensure successful takeover from the Ethiopian Battalion. The additional troops are expected to deploy in April.
The battalion will effectively dominate the Sector North to ensure successful implementation of UNISFA Mandate. Task to be carried out include conducting patrols and escort duties, monitoring forward and reverse migration of Misseriya population, establishing observation posts, checkpoints and operating bases, controlling civil disturbances, providing security to UN personnel and installations, providing security escort to humanitarian aid agencies, monitoring and reporting on violations according to the Abyei agreement among others.
