Peacekeeper Killed in Southern Sudan: A rejoinder

Abyei, 15 July 2020 – The attention of United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is drawn to a news story by Radio Debanga captioned ‘Peacekeeper killed in Southern Sudan”, in which a UNISFA peacekeeper is said to have been shot dead in Sudan. at Kadugli, Southern Kordofan, on Monday, 13 July 2020.

It is hereby clarified that the person killed is not a UNISFA peacekeeper, as indicated in the report mentioned above, but a UNISFA Contractor from IMDAD. The incident took place at about 1800 hours on Monday, 13 July 2020.

According to the preliminary inquiries made, the victim, Haitham Awad Osman, and another IMDAD Contractor together with three other people, were traveling in a taxi to Kadugli town., when the vehicle in which they were traveling was passing a venue at which a wedding was underway at Murta village, located about 3.2 Km from UNISFA Log Base there was firing by an unknown armed individual from the back of the car hitting and killing the victim instantly. Other passengers were, however, not harmed.

The local police are currently conducting investigations.
