Strengthening the Ngok Dinka Traditional Justice System
In a significant step towards boosting the Ngok Dinka Traditional Justice System, UNISFA, in collaboration the Abyei Ministry for Local Government and Law Enforcement, organized a one-day workshop on 15 December, for key stakeholders in the traditional justice sector. The meeting focused on customary law and practices, as well as the prevailing legal terrain governing traditional justice administration.
This is the first in a series of activities aimed at assessing, evaluating, and strengthening the existing traditional justice system in Abyei. The process will also identify ways to fill the gap in the law-and-order vacuum in Abyei. Attendees included the Paramount Chief, Nine Ngok Dinka Chiefs, Traditional Court Judges, Community Protection Committee, Women leaders, and Youth Organizations. The workshop examined the provisions of Ngok Dinka customary law and practices, as well as the current laws governing the administration of the traditional justice system.
