UNISFA celebrates World AIDS Day

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) observed the World AIDS Day (WAD) 2017 with activities engaging communities and Mission staff focusing on the right to health.  UNISFA’s #myrighttohealth campaign provided information about the right to health and its impact on people’s lives.

A program to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS was held on 29 November in Abyei town which included drama and poetry presentations, essay writing contest, poster exhibition, and was highlighted by a soccer match between UNISFA troops and the youth of Abyei.

On 1 December, the final games of various sporting events were held inside the Mission Headquarters in Abyei, followed by the awarding ceremony and the reading of the message of the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibé, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations by the UNISFA’s Acting Head of Mission and the Force Commander Major General Tesfay Gidey Hailemichael.

Similar activities were conducted on 1 December in Kadugli and Gok Machar. The commemoration of WAD included community awareness campaigns which made the events special.
