UNISFA completes establishment of year-round Rumamier permanent camp
As part of efforts to boost security in the southern part of Abyei, UNISFA has inaugurated a permanent camp in Rumamier. Constructed in a record six weeks, by Vietnamese Engineers and the Mission Support Division, the new camp will enable the mission to maintain a continuous presence in the area throughout the year, significantly enhancing security for the local community.
Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Benjamin Sawyerr in his remarks, expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of peacekeepers who played a significant role in ensuring the successful completion of the project.
“Today marks a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to strengthen security and the protection of civilians in southern Abyei. The completion of this camp is testament of our efforts towards this goal. Moving forward, we will continue to work with the local community to ensure that the calm that has returned to the area is maintained and civilians who were displaced return home,” said Maj. Gen. Saywerr.
Rumamier has suffered from repeated attacks, but impassable roads during the rainy season previously limited the missions’ operations to the dry season. The new camp, which includes a helipad, will allow the mission to address security challenges in the area.
Local leaders, including the Paramount Chief and Rumamier Chief, attended the inauguration ceremony of the camp and thanked UNISFA for the timely intervention. They vowed to encourage displaced communities to return to the area.
