UNISFA Efforts to Respond to Abyei Cholera Outbreak

Cholera cases continue to rise in Abyei and Kadugli, prompting UNISFA peacekeepers to launch health-focused initiatives across the mission’s Area of Operation. These efforts aim to strengthen the resilience of both peacekeepers and local communities.

In Diffra, Sector North, PAKBATT peacekeepers worked with local health authorities to establish a cholera isolation centre. The facility provides treatment and isolation services for affected individuals. It is open to both Misseriya and Ngok Dinka communities, including traders in the Amiet market. Alongside treatment, peacekeepers are distributing medicine, masks, sanitizers, raincoats, mosquito nets, and clothes to support prevention.

In Sector South, GHANBATT peacekeepers have intensified community awareness campaigns. These include hygiene promotion and medical outreach to support vulnerable groups. The peacekeepers are providing clean water education, distributing purification tablets, and spreading hygiene messages. They are also running medical clinics that offer screening and basic treatment.

In Sector Center, GHANBATT medical teams have set up an isolation centre at Mission Headquarters in Abyei. Here, peacekeepers and community members are receiving cholera vaccinations and treatment. This dual approach safeguards both host communities and mission personnel, highlighting UNISFA’s commitment to health security and operational readiness.

INDBATT teams in the same sector are also delivering emergency response. They provide immediate care and basic treatment to affected individuals.

As Abyei confronts the twin challenges of public health risks and regional instability, UNISFA’s health interventions underscore the evolving role of peacekeepers. They continue to act not only as protectors, but also as partners and humanitarians in times of crisis.
