Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with UNISFA’s GHANBATT and the Ghana Level II Hospital, have been awarded the United Nations medal in recognition of their contribution to peace and security in Abyei. The award ceremony was held on 6 March, in Athony, and was presided over by the Ag. Head of Mission/FC Major General Ganesh Shrestha. A high-level delegation from Ghana, led by the Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen Lawrence Gbetanu, was in attendance, as well as the Abyei Administrator, Paramount Chief and chiefs.
Major General Shrestha congratulated the Ghanaian peacekeepers for the high level of professionalism demonstrated throughout their tour of duty. He commended GHANBATT for its role in protecting civilians, highlighting their response during last year’s clashes at Athony Junction, where they helped rescue hundreds of civilians and restore calm. During the ceremony, 28 staff officers, UNPOL and UNMOS were also awarded UN medals.
“Today’s ceremony is more than a formal presentation of decorations; it is a solemn recognition of discipline, courage, and distinguished service under the UN flag. Each medal symbolizes months of unwavering commitment in a challenging operational environment and your meaningful contribution to peace and stability in Abyei,” said the Ag. HoM/FC.
He also commended personnel serving with the Ghana Level II Hospital for the delivery of vital and comprehensive medical support, ranging from emergency and surgical services to the local as well as the effective evacuation of casualties during the 13 December 2025 drone attack on UNISFA peacekeepers in Kadugli. Additionally, he commended the current medical support being provided to civilian casualties from the Abienhom attack in South Sudan.
Ghanaian peacekeepers have served under the banner of United Nations peacekeeping since the early 1970s, demonstrating professionalism, courage, and dedication in some of the world’s most challenging environments. From operations in the Sinai to numerous missions across the African continent, Ghana’s peacekeepers have contributed significantly to global peace and security.
The ceremony also served as part of activities marking Ghana’s 69th Independence Day Anniversary, celebrating the country’s continued contribution to global peace and security.
