UNPOL Launches Women’s Tailoring Project in Mekenis Village

Seven women in Mekenis Village have begun a transformative journey toward economic independence through a newly launched tailoring project supported by UN Police (UNPOL). Equipped with sewing machines and all necessary materials, the beneficiaries are gaining practical, income-generating skills designed to create sustainable livelihoods. The initiative was officially launched on 23 February, bringing together women and community leaders. UNISFA Police Commissioner Helmey Abraham officiated the event.

It aims to strengthen local resilience by promoting gender-responsive community engagement and inclusivity. By investing directly in women’s empowerment, the project will boost household income, support children’s access to education, and reinforce self-reliance as part of UNPOL’s continued commitment to ensuring that women are active participants in peacebuilding efforts.

Speaking at the launch Ababa Ahmed, a beneficiary, described the training as life-changing, “This is a great opportunity for me. When I complete this training, I will contribute positively to my community. I will start my own business and support my children to attend school. The skills that I am gaining through this project are life-changing for me and my fellow women,” she said.

Community leaders welcomed the initiative, recognizing its tangible and lasting impact on the lives of women in Mekenis, they expressed appreciation for the practical support provided, noting that the project will deliver not only equipment and training, but renewed hope and opportunity.

Through targeted empowerment interventions, UNPOL continues to translate mandate delivery into measurable impact, and advance sustainable peace from at the grassroots.
