As part of its continued commitment to the protection of civilians and the promotion of human rights in Abyei, UNISFA UNPOL joined the Abyei Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, SGBV protection actors, women, youth and community representatives in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on 25 June 2026.
Held under the theme “Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Against Children: Safeguarding Futures and Empowering Caregivers,” the event highlighted the grave impact of conflict-related sexual violence on children, families and communities, while emphasizing the shared responsibility to prevent violations, support survivors and strengthen accountability.

Speaking on behalf of UNPOL, Ms. Gift Mwansa, OIC Gender Advisor reaffirmed UNISFA’s commitment, through UNPOL and other mission components, to work closely with local authorities, communities and partners to enhance early warning, raise awareness and promote survivor-centred support. The commemoration also featured remarks from key stakeholders, drama and cultural performances.
