World AIDS Day 2016

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) joined the global community in celebrating World AIDS Day (WAD) on 1 December 2016. Taking into consideration the diverse background of UNISFA staff, WAD 2016 was commemorated through various sports, a platform to disseminate information and reach-out to staff. Hundreds of staff joined sporting events such as volleyball, badminton, billiards, table tennis, tug of peace and mini-marathon. Winners of the sporting events were awarded during the ceremony on 1 December. An equally important occasion was also marked to honor the men and women of Level-2 Hospital, Light Field Engineering, Headquarter Supporting Units and Mechanized Companies through a medal parade. The Special Guest of Honor Acting Force Commander and Head of Mission (A/FC and HoM) Brig Gen Zewdu Gebrekidan led the ceremony’s guests including OIC Principal Officer Daniel Adekera, Liaison Officer Brig General Belay Seyoum. In her keynote speech, A/FC and HoM Brig Gen Gebrekidan commended the holding of the joint event. “This will contribute to coordinated efforts in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS.” Delivered by UNISFA’S Chief Medical Officer Dr Martin Konyangi, the UNSG’s message also stated that while there is clear progress in efforts to stop AIDS, gains remain fragile. Key populations continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. During the medal ceremony, Gen Gebrekidan honored the peacekeepers who have contributed valuable support in building basic infrastructure, providing health services, communication and force protection.
