GHANA CONTINGENT

A picture containing shapeDescription automatically generatedThe Ghanaian Battalion was the first contingent to be deployed in UNISFA following the reconfiguration of the Mission into a multinational one.  The Advance Party of GHANBATT under the command of Maj ERW Awudu deployed in Abyei on 24 January 2022. The Contingent is made up of 570 all ranks, comprising of 68 females and 502 males under the command of Lt Col Eric K Aboagye Tieku. GHANBATT 1 is formed from various units in the Ghana Armed Forces with the 1 Signal Regiment as the nucleus. The Battalion’s Area of Responsibility is the Sector South of the Abyei Box with a mission to dominate and demilitarize Sector, while creating a safe and secured environment to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and protection of civilians in collaboration with other UN actors. Hence, GHANBATT carries out numerous task such as conduct of patrols, escort duties, cordon and search operations, evacuation operations and protection of civilians among others. In carrying out its protection of civilians’ task, GHANBATT has since its deployment come into direct action with armed groups on 9 occasions and have successfully executed it task. The Battalion is currently deployed in 5 Company Operating Bases located at ATHONY, AGOK, MARIAL ACHAK, TAJALEI and BANTON.
