Commemorating UN Day in Abyei, Strengthening Partnerships for Peace and Security

On 24 October, the UN in Abyei marked the 79th United Nations Day with a commemorative ceremony at the mission headquarters The event was attended by representatives of the Juba-appointed Administration, traditional leaders, local community, UNISFA and UN agency personnel.

The celebration featured a military parade, a flag-hoisting ceremony, and the launching of the newly constructed UNISFA Square.

The Acting Chief Administrator, Hon. Deng Arop Mading, in his address, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in Abyei, urging the UN to enhance collaboration with the Administration and support the safe, dignified return of the Dinka Ngok to the ancestral homes.  “A secure future for Abyei can only be achieved through shared efforts and robust partnerships,” he noted.

OIC-Acting Head of Mission/FC Brig. Gen. Vincent Moyo, delivered the UN Secretary-General’s message, underscoring the UN’s recent adoption of forward-looking initiatives, including the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations. Together, these milestone agreements will help ensure that the United Nations system adapts, reforms and rejuvenates, so it is fit for the changes and challenges around us and delivers solutions for all.

A display of the work of the UN in Abyei , highlighting different initiatives by peacekeepers and UN Agencies and funds, was organized to showcase the work of the UN in Abyei. Informative posters, interactive displays, and presentations underscored the mission's achievements and underscored the impact of UNISFA's presence in promoting stability and fostering collaboration among Abyei’s communities.
