Abyei Unites in Observance of Human Rights Day

As part of activities to commemorate this year’s Human Rights Day, UNISFA in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, organized a ceremony to observe the Human Rights Day. The event’ which was held at the Comboni School in Abyei, was attended by among others, the Minister for Education, the Paramount Chief, and peace partners.

The local leaders called for inclusivity, empowerment, and the protection of fundamental human rights in Abyei echoing this year’s theme "Freedom, Equality, and Freedom, Equality and Justice for All.”

OIC Ag. HoM/FC Brig General Abu Syed Bakir affirmed UNISFAs commitment to upholding human rights and called on the Abyei authorities to be inclusive of the Disability Association in all activities and decision-making processes, recognizing both their basic human rights and the valuable contributions they bring to the community.

“Despite the challenges that Abyei has faced, it is imperative that we maintain unity and work together to prevent human rights violations,” said OIC Ag. HoM/FC Brig Gen Bakir. “UN Security Council resolution 2021 states an important task that is ‘Effective Human Rights Monitoring’, which will further contribute to the Protection of Civilians. In that regard, we count on your support to improve the monitoring of the human rights situation in Abyei,” he added.

Affirming UNISFA’s commitment to the observance of human rights for all, He called on the Abyei community including the Administration, traditional justice system, civil society and peace partners continue working together with UNISFA to achieve our collective goal of establishing peace in Abyei.

The International Day of Human Rights is celebrated every year on 10 December, which is the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
