UNISFA condemns disinformation about mission’s mandate and activities

Abyei, 7 December 2023 - The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is deeply concerned that images of peacekeepers are being deliberately misrepresented on social media and in public statements by local authorities in an attempt to undermine the mission’s impartiality and its activities to protect civilians.

A photograph depicting peacekeepers on regular patrols to protect civilians and Abyei’s weapon-free status is being manipulated to falsely link the mission to an armed group in the Anthony Junction area in southern Abyei.

UNISFA calls on social media users and other stakeholders to verify the facts and refrain from sharing inaccurate information that could escalate tensions and cause harm to local communities and peacekeepers.

The mission is continuing to work with all stakeholders in the pursuit of a peaceful resolution of violence in the southern part of Abyei. UNISFA remains fully committed to fulfilling its mandate, particularly in the protection of civilians, and will support all measures promoted by stakeholders to ensure a return to peace.
