GHANBATT boosts security and delivers humanitarian assistance in Sector South

The Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) has stepped up security and humanitarian efforts in Sector South ahead of the 2025 seasonal migration and following recent clashes at Athony Junction, which resulted in several deaths and displaced civilians.

The battalion has increased daily mobile patrols and reconnaissance missions to deter violence, secure migration corridors and to monitor the movement of armed elements and better protect civilians. Mobile reserves units are on standby to boost response.

These security efforts align with GHANBATT’s efforts to secure key supply routes, ensuring safe passage for civilians, humanitarian workers, and UN personnel. Despite poor road conditions, unpredictable security challenges, and limited resources, the peacekeepers continue to carry out operations day and night to mitigate risks and prevent any escalation.

Humanitarian support for displaced communities

In addition to stepping up security measures, GHANBATT has expanded the provision of humanitarian assistance to the local community especially those in hard-to-reach areas.

Medical teams have been offering basic healthcare services, including treatment for pregnant women and children. Ongoing assessments are in place to identify additional humanitarian needs.

Community Engagement and Support Activities

Additionally, the peacekeepers have launched various community initiatives aimed at enhancing building community trust. Medical outreach programs have taken place in communities like Banton, Agok, Abathok, Marial Achak, Rumamier, and Akenghial, providing consultations, emergency care, and essential treatments in areas lacking health services. Veterinary teams have also aided local livelihoods by treating and vaccinating livestock and pets.

GHANBATT is also supporting education activities, distribution of water and school supplies. The contingent is facilitating gender sensitization programs and working closely with traditional and community leaders to sensitize the communities on pertinent issues. These actions help build trust and improve early warning systems, fostering cooperation between peacekeepers and local populations.
