Pre-migration conference of Ngok Dinka and Misseriya held

A three-day pre-migration conference organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) took place between 3 and 5 March 2018, in the village of Todach.

Over 100 participants attended the conference from the NgokDinka and Misseriya communities including women and children. The theme of the conference was “Promotion of Peace through Natural Resource Sharing” and at the end of the event, resolutions were reached, an agreement drafted and signed by representatives of the parties and witnessed by UNISFA representatives.

The conference started by reviewing the pre-migration conference signed in 2017, especially the challenges encountered during the period. Participants were grouped according to the migration routes to discuss issues specific to their routes and at the end, each group came up with its achievements, challenges and way forward. The plenary reports from the three working groups were compiled and a drafting committee set up to draft the 2018 peace agreement, which was presented to the wider participants for review and endorsement. With concurrence from the participants, a final resolution was ratified. The agreement covered diverse matters covering all areas regulating the relationship of the Misseriya and Ngok Dinka especially issues relating to security, social and economic, settlement of disputes and social justice.
