UNISFA celebrates International Women’s Day

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) celebrated the International Women’s Day in the Abyei Area with multiple events engaging the communities and mission staff, and showcasing the resilience of women.

The event was held at the Abyei Women’s Centre with representatives from UNISFA and UN Agencies representatives, traditional leaders, school children, as well as women from communities in Abyei.

Maj Gen Ataklti Gebremariam, the Officiating Force Commander and Acting Head of Mission, referred to the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Time is Now : Rural and Urban activists transforming women’s life” and highlighted the struggle by women all around the world to overcome the injustices they face.

Maj Gen Gebremariam conveyed the message of the UN Secretary General, “At this crucial moment for women’s rights, it is time for men to stand with women, listen to them and learn from them. Transparency and accountability are essential if women are to reach their full potential and lift all of us, in our communities, societies and economies. I am proud to be a part of this movement, and I hope it continues to resonate within the United Nations and around the world.”

During the celebration, the newly constructed Abyei Women’s Centre was officially handed-over to the community.
