Misseriya and Ngok Dinka sign agreement ahead of migration season
The Misseriya and Ngok Dinka communities on 15 December, signed an agreement to prevent conflict and foster stronger ties. The agreement was successfully brokered during a four-day seasonal pre-migration conference hosted by INDBATT in Noong village, north of Abyei town.
A joint effort by FAO, IOM, Concordis and UNISFA, the conference brought together representatives of the two communities, including the Joint Peace Committee and corridor leaders to collectively address pre-migration challenges. The peace deal also seeks to prevent tensions between farmers, displaced communities, the Ngok Dinka and the Misseriya. As nomadic pastoralists, the communities, traditionally move their cattle in search of fresh between January and April each year.
The conference not only served as a platform for evaluating past agreements and addressing challenges but was also a catalyst for innovative solutions and a renewed commitment to peace. It aims to facilitate dialogue, foster mutual understanding, and implement practical measures that contribute to the well-being of all communities involved in migration processes.

Brig. Gen. Abu Syed Bakir, Deputy Force Commander, emphasized the complexity of migration, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and cooperative approach. He underscored that in Abyei, where migration's impact intertwines with historical events and geopolitical considerations, “it is a collective responsibility to create an environment that safeguards the rights and dignity of those affected."
